Woman left ‘almost completely blind’ in one eye after making common contact lens mistake

Maureen Cronin ended up being hospitalized and is now losing her vision in one eye

A woman made a simple error with her contact lenses and is suffering vision loss as a result.

Millions of individuals around the world wear contact lenses, and there’s a strong likelihood that at some point they’ve made the mistake Maureen Cronin did, which led to her being diagnosed with a rare infection.

Tragedy befell Maureen in August of last year when she was admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital in New York, USA.

The 53-year-old ultimately required a cornea transplant in September 2024, but her body rejected the transplant.

Maureen asserts that the steroid drops prescribed to alleviate her pain have led to her developing glaucoma. Consequently, she’s now nearly blind in her right eye and is awaiting another cornea transplant in hopes of regaining some of her vision.

Regarding the origin of the infection, it boils down to Maureen wearing her lenses while swimming.

Maureen commenced giving swimming lessons to young children in their private backyard pools in June of last year, but after instructing seven children while using her contact lenses in the pool, she asserts her right eye began to cause her discomfort.

Maureen, who has been wearing contact lenses for nearly 20 years, described it as feeling like a grain of sand was lodged in her eye, and when the pain escalated to ‘excruciating’ levels, she visited an eye doctor who prescribed eye drops.
