When you become a “real” adult
Many respondents shared that they began to feel like a true adult primarily after achieving specific financial milestones—the age associated with feeling like an adult aligns closely with when those surveyed began taking their finances more seriously—around 28.
Talker Research highlights that the top two responses were that 56 percent felt like adults when they started paying their own bills, and 45 percent cited financial independence as a milestone.
Additionally, 46 percent indicated they first felt like adults when they moved out of their parents’ home.
Moreover, 40 percent of participants noted that obtaining life insurance is a clear indicator of adulthood, with 53 percent of Gen Z strongly agreeing.

That said, many don’t embrace adulting wholeheartedly; 56 percent of respondents expressed feeling overwhelmed by their financial responsibilities, and 71 percent believe adulthood today is more challenging than it was three decades ago. Notably, 72 percent referenced the ongoing cost of living crisis as a major concern.
