On his podcast “Lifespan,” Dr. Sinclair stated: “The rate of growth of your nails provides a solid indicator of your aging process.

“I keep tabs on whether my nails are growing more slowly. Each time I trim them, I ask myself, ‘When did I last do this?’”

During the podcast, he mentioned a 1979 study where researchers monitored fingernail growth in hundreds of individuals over time.

The findings revealed that, after the age of 30, the weekly growth rate of fingernails declines by approximately 0.5 percent each year.

According to this study, if your nails grow at a rate faster than this benchmark, it might indicate that you are aging at a slower rate than average.

Moreover, fingernails can also signal potential serious health issues.

While nail characteristics vary among individuals, experts recommend that people take note of any changes in their nail shape or color.

For instance, a dark spot beneath a nail could be a warning sign of cancer, while white spots or lines may suggest deficiencies in essential nutrients like calcium, iron, or zinc.
