Dublin-born Irish goalkeeper Simon Byrne is back in action for the Republic of Ireland at the World Cup after suffering a knee injury.

The 27-year-old was injured in a tackle by Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gomez in the opening game of the qualifying round on Wednesday night.

He underwent surgery to repair the ligament damage and is set to undergo a further scan on Friday.

Byrne, who has made 10 appearances for Ireland, scored his first senior goal in a 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in March last year.
