There are plenty of horror movies that are available for free on Netflix.

However, when it comes to the best movies for a small, home-made buck, you may want to look elsewhere.

Here’s a rundown of the best horror movies for your viewing pleasure.


Pixie The movie about the witch of the West in 1920s Kansas was made by filmmaker Barbara Shaw, who later went on to direct her own feature film and other horror films.

It has been nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Actress for actress Audrey Hepburn, and Best Actress in a Musical for star Emma Watson.

Shaw is also known for her work with the British indie-rock band The Bends.


Battleship: The Battle of Midway (1932) A science fiction epic starring John Huston and Meryl Streep that follows an interplanetary crew of explorers as they make their way through the galaxy.


Carnivores (2014) Directed by the great David Fincher, this film follows a team of survivors on the planet Earth in the aftermath of a nuclear war.

The story is told in flashback and in the voice of its star, Amy Adams.


Deadly Premonition (1992) Set on a remote US reservation in the early 1980s, this movie follows a group of men in their 20s who are hunted by a group called The Devil’s Crew, led by a killer known as The Man.

It’s also a remake of the 1985 film.


The Devil’s Carnival (2013) Based on the novel by the same name by Terry Pratchett, this supernatural drama follows a series of murders on a British holiday resort.

It stars Natalie Portman, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Wilkinson.


The House of the Dead (2017) A comedy starring Kevin Bacon, Kate Winslet, and Kristen Stewart that follows a man whose wife has a fatal illness and the couple must flee their isolated home.


Hush (2009) Based off of the novel of the same title by author Cormac McCarthy, this British-American crime thriller follows a high school teacher who has to escape a haunted house in a bid to save his daughter.


The Haunted House (2011) Directing by Jonny Greenwood and starring Robert Pattinson and Jessica Chastain, this horror classic follows a haunted hotel where a boy and his mother struggle to cope with the terrifying events of their past.


The Horror (2017)(Possibly the best of the lot) This horror anthology film follows two siblings on their quest to discover the truth about a mysterious woman in a small town.


Nightmare Before Christmas (2018) The story of a teenage boy and a witch who are stranded in the woods as a snowstorm hits and the only way out is through the use of a supernatural device.


The Womb (2016) A supernatural thriller that follows two girls who must navigate a family in mourning when they are kidnapped and placed in a witch’s home.


The Witch (2009)(Based on the book of the name) Based upon the novel, this paranormal thriller follows two sisters in search of their missing father after his death.


The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2017)- A supernatural tale of a girl with two dragon horns who must overcome her past and uncover her true identity in order to save her people.


The Woman in Black (2016)(Possible the best) This film follows an American couple who have to deal with a serial killer who targets wealthy families in their small town and their daughter.


The Cabin in the Woods (2007)(Based off of a novel by David Copperfield) Based in part on the novels of the author, this thriller follows an FBI agent who is hired by a local family to solve a series.


A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) A horror classic about a family of six that must save their home from a series that is out to murder their neighbors.


The Witches of Eastwick (1997)(Based in part off of John Steinbeck’s novel The Turn of the Screw) Based of the book, this story follows the lives of four people whose lives are put on hold by an evil witch and her followers in the middle of the night.


Catch Me If You Can (2016)* Based on a short story by Robert Frost, this comedy follows four friends who must go on an expedition to the heart of the Amazon jungle to track down the person who kidnapped their grandmother.


The Last House on the Left (1999) Based out of the film of the the same book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, This movie follows the exploits of an American detective who goes on an epic quest to locate a man accused of murdering his family.
